Letter of Guidance from the Lubavitcher Rebbe – Ban on Mashkeh – 1957 – "If There is Any Doubt that He Will Become Drunk with Even a Small Amount of Alcoholic Drink, Then Even That is Prohibited"

Letter from Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneersohn – the Lubavitcher Rebbe, with his handwritten signature. Brooklyn NY, 20th MarCheshvan 1957.
Typewritten on the official stationery of the rebbe, with his signature and several words and corrections in his handwriting.
The present letter pertains to the ban on Mashkeh (restriction of alcoholic drinks for those under the age of forty, and especially amongst unmarried yeshiva students. The ban was only formally instituted five years later, on Shabbat Mevarchim Iyar 1963, yet the rebbe mentioned it on several occasions even before then).
In his letter, the rebbe turns to his addressee regarding the distressing report that "he is sometimes not careful in regard to the consumption of alcoholic beverages, with excess to the point that it is obvious to all that he is drunk, and this happens occasionally in public during a Hitvaadut", and writes to him that the views of Chabad rebbes was "against alcoholic drinks at all except at joyous occasions, and even then only in measure, and each person according to what is right for them, meaning that if there is any doubt that he will become inebriated even from a small amount of alcoholic drink, then even that is prohibited".

The rebbe stresses the duty to refrain from drinking in public at Hitvaaduyot, especially if there are non-Chassidim present, since one could use this pretext to distance others from Chabad and its teachings.
The rebbe concludes his letter with hope that the addressee will henceforth be adequately careful in this matter, adding "and in case of doubt – rule stringently".
The letter was printed in Igrot Kodesh of the Lubavitcher Rebbe (vol. XVI, letter 5861), and in Likutei Sichot (part XXII, p. 297), with omissions.
