Novel published by the wildly prolific Portuguese writer Castelo Branco (1825-90), the Balzac, or Dickens, of Portugal who was widely read throughout the Portuguese-speaking world. It retells the life of António José da Silva (1705-39), known as O Judeu ("The Jew"), an outstanding dramatist and native of Rio de Janeiro who was deported to Portugal from Brazil by the Inquisition where he was garroted and burnt at a Lisbon auto-da-fe. It is suggested that Castelo Branco himself was of Converso origin. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/António_José_da_Silva and www.youtube.com/watch? v=MZbQVRKagDk.
