Viennese born Isidor Bush (formerly Busch) was the editor of the Kalender und Jahrbuch für Israeliten, but following the failed Revolution of 1848, emigrated to the United States. He developed the short-lived Israel’s Herald, the first Jewish weekly in America. Afterwards he removed to St. Louis where he was involved in Jewish communal life. Subsequently he made his fortune with vineyards on land he called Bushberg. He was an outspoken abolitionist, a "Union Man" at the Missouri Secession Convention and played an important role in keeping Missouri in the Union.
