L. H. Hershfield (1836-1910). Ten engraved bank checks. Printed with manuscript entries, signed.

From the Banking House of L. H. Hershfield of Helena, Montana. Vignette of a prospector with a dog. All are signed by Hershfield, or his brother and partner, Aaron.
All with US Revenue stamps, some with high value.
Helena, MT: 1866-1874

Lewis H. Hershfield was originally of Oneida, NY. After stints in St. Louis, and Leavenworth, KS, he relocated to Colorado when “the great gold excitement broke out.” After making a fortune from the acquisition of a great quantity of gold dust, he established a bank, which his brother joined as partner. He was a member of Montana’s Constitutional Convention in 1889. See The Montana Blue Book (Helena, MT, 1891), p. 151, for his biography and portrait.
