Camp Folly and James Island, SC: July 21st & 25th 1863

Simon Levy was commander during the Civil War of the Independent Battalion of New York Volunteer Infantry. The reports here provide statistics of troop strength, numbers and availability. Simon Wolf, in his “In the American Jew as Soldier and Patriot” (PAJHS, no. 3, 1895, p. 24) records that Simon Levy’s three sons, Benjamin, Alfred, and Ferdinand, also enlisted and were all officers in the Union Army.
