R. Menachem Mendel was the son of R. Dov Berish of Biala (1820-76) and grandson of R. Avraham of Tshechanov (1784–1875). After his father’s passing, R. Menachem Mendel associated with the Chasidic court of Alexander. When in 1910, R.Yerachmiel Yisrael Danziger, the Yismach Yisrael, Admor of Alexander, died without a son to succeed him, R.
