Újhely (Sátoraljaújhely, Ihel, Hungary): Wednesday of Parshath Shemoth 1939

Rabbi Dik, known as R. Hirsch Dayan, was the Posek of the Ashkenazi (that is, non-Chasidic) community of Ujhel. See Benjamin Eisenberg, The Life and Death of Rabbi Zvi Hacohen Dick, in: Vanished Communities in Hungary: The History and Tragic Fate of the Jews in Újhely and Zemplén County (ed. Meir Sas, Toronto, 1986), pp. 168-170. One quarter of Újhely's pre-war population was Jewish, which made it, next to Budapest, the most “Jewish city” in Hungary. The Yismach Moshe, R. Moshe Teitelbaum (1759-1841) was Rebbe of Ujhely, and is buried there. Also buried there is R. Aleksander Sender Eichenstein (1770-1818) of Kormarno.
