<<(Tab / Tabau, Hungary).>> Protokol der Chevra Kadisha [Burial Society volume].

Manuscript in Hebrew and Yiddish written in square and cursive calligraphic hands on paper. The title page is a model of elegant simplicity. At the beginning of the volume are 12 pages arranged according to the Hebrew months. Each one lists the names and yahrzeit dates for that month, and cross references to where these names can be found later in the book. Following this section are pages dedicated to individuals or families, where the names are written in large calligraphic script, and further details are added in Yiddish. The earliest date is 1840, and the latest is 1942. At the end, an earlier manuscript of approximately 20 pages of memorial entries are bound.
pp. 162 (excluding blanks). Light wear. Modern calf. Folio.
Tab, (today, Tabi járás, Somogy County): 1840-1942

Tab had a Jewish community beginning in the 18th century. Its large synagogue was built in 1762. In the 1853 census, 625 residents were Jewish. At the eve of WWII its Jewish population numbered approximately 2000. Notable rabbis of this community include Rabbi Wolf Abeles and his grandson Rabbi Wolf Breuer, who published his grandfather’s writings in Nachalath Binyamin (Paks, 1889).
