Hedyas, Hungary: 1861
The title page of this Pinkas, written in a beautiful hand in black and red, states:“We of the Chevra Kadisha mutually agree that every man or woman who donates during their lifetime, or leaves a bequest through their heirs, will have their souls… recorded in this volume.” Several pages of names follow dated between 1863 and 1871. The small town of of Hedyas (Yidd.) or Hőgyész (Hung.) is located in Tolna County, central Hungary, on the west bank of the river Danube. Jews first came there in the beginning of the 18th century under the patronage of Count Gyorgy Apponyi. The rabbis of Hedyas were outstanding in Hungary. For three generations the seat was held by the Goitein rabbinic family. The first of these was Rabbi Baruch Bendet Goitein (1770-1842), author of Kesef Nivchar and correspondent of the Chasam Sofer. Following his death, his son Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch (1805-60), author of Yedei Moshe, was appointed rabbi. After him was Rabbi Eliyahu Menachem (1837-1902).
