WILLIAM GRENVILLE
(1759 - 1834) British Tory who served as Prime Minister from 1806 to 1807, though he was a supporter of the Whig Party for the duration of the Napoleonic Wars. Good content manuscript D.S., 1p. legal folio, Whitehall, June 5, 1789 - his first day as Home Secretary - to the Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. In part: 'His Majesty having been pleased to honor me with the seals of the Home Department...I take the earliest opportunity of acquainting you herewith. It will give me great satisfaction to be able to fulfill His Majesty's gracious intentions...your Dispatches should for the future be addressed to me. I shall not fail to lay them immediately before The King...' Fine.
