HARRY T. HAYS
(1820 - 1876) Confederate brigadier general, his brigade, the 'Louisiana Tigers', played a major role during the Battle of Gettysburg when they ascended Cemetery Hill in the darkness and overran several artillery batteries before finally being driven off. Good content A.L.S. on his legal letterhead, 2pp. 4to., New Orleans, May 15, 1873 to Col. Charles C. Jones (1831-1893), Mayor of Savannah who also fought in the defense of the city, financially ruined by the war. He was also an avid autograph collector. In part: '...I have not the autographs of either Genl. Franklin Gardner or Genl. Mouton...Genl. Frank Gardner died in this State four or five days since...there was no Genl. J. C. Carter in said service. There was a Colonel...who commanded the 1st Tenn...He, I understand, was killed during the last year of the war...' Very good to fine.
