DANIEL ULLMAN
(1810-1892) Civil War Union general most known for raising and leading regiments of colored troops. Fine war-date A.L.S, 2p., 4to., New York, Jan. 26, 1863, letter to Gen J. Sprague, in part: '…I am greatly concerned for the welfare of this regiment, (78th New York Volunteer) taking a profound interest in the men; they have proved themselves on many a hard fought field to be brave, true, and loyal, and in my judgment are among the best fighting material in the army. I wish that they have an efficient commanding officer....The Major, Henry C. Blanchard is totally unfit for command. He is a drunkard, a silly, vain and constant liar, knows nothing of tactics and never will, for he has neither the capacity nor diligence to learn them...I would have him tried by a Court Martial.' Very fine condition.
