AUTOGRAPH BOOK OF THE FIRST CONFEDERATE CONGRESS, JEFFERSON DAVIS, AND HIS CABINET
An excessively rare and historic Civil War item, an autograph book containing the signatures of 124 members of the First Confederate Congress, a near complete collection. The first part of the album consists of Confederate senators' autographs; the second is devoted to Confederate representatives' autographs and is collected alphabetically by state. Included are Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Following these signatures appears the signatures of President JEFFERSON DAVIS, along with his cabinet members JUDAH P. BENJAMIN, GEORGE W. RANDOLPH, CHRISTOPHER MEMMINGER, STEPHEN P. MALLORY, and THOMAS H. WATTS. Also included are the signatures of senior staff members and other officers, including ABRAHAM MYERS, SAMUEL COOPER, JOHN M. WITHERS, JASPER S. WHITING, JOSIAH GORGAS, THOMAS S. RHETT, and a few others. The book bears a gold-embossed tooled leather cover and contains 100+ pages, 8 x 6.5 in. Attributed to a Miss Clara M. Cannon of Torrey Creek, South Carolina, whose name appears twice within. Given the death dates of some of the signatories, this collection must have been assembled between February 18 and October 13, 1862. Covers worn and binding somewhat loose, wear commensurate with age, internally fine. An irreplaceable historic relic!
