VON RICHTOFEN AND THOMA CONDOR LEGION PRESENTATION DESK SET
Spanish-made sterling silver desk set presented by Luftwaffe WOLFRAM FREIHERR VON RICHTOFEN (1895-1945), a commander of the Condor Legion, to WILHELM RITTER VON THOMA (1891-1948), who commanded the ground element of the Codor Legion. The desk set measures 13.5 x 8 x 4.5 in. with two pen holders and two paper or envelope supports. Four corners are adorned with double-headed eagles surmounting globes. The front of the set bears and engraving depicting the Condor Legion standard at the center of a period engraved inscription in German. It reads: '1936 LEGION CONDOR 1939 My warmest thanks to Frhr von Thoma for your kind contribution to the victorious LEGION CONDOR company. More soldierly luck. Always your [facsimile signature] W. Frhr. v. Richtofen' Spanish maker's hallmark appears at right. Light tarnish. Of typical period Spanish style and construction, undoubtedly presented to von Thoma on the spot as the pair likely had no idea if and when they would meet again.
