PAUL-WERNER HOPPE
(1910-1974) SS lieutenant-colonel, commandant of the Stutthof concentration camp near Danzig from 1942 through 1945. A.L.S., 3pp. 4to. [n.p.], 1949, likely written shortly after his release from British captivity at Fallingbostel internment camp. In part: 'Dear Major, you are probably surprised to hear from me once again from far away...I have managed to keep myself above water this year as well, even if it hasn’t always been easy...I cannot be with my family. The so-called de-nazification in Germany is still not finished but it is assumed that little by little it will all quiet down and that these unwelcomed things will come to an end. It is also not excluded that one day an Amnesty will be given. I hope that I will be able to hold out until then...' Signed at the conclusion in blue ink. Two file holes at left margin, else fine.
