CHARLES W. LINDBERG
(1920 - 2007) U.S. Marine who was part of the combat patrol that climbed Mount Suribachi and raised the first of two U.S. flags on the summit during the battle of Iwo Jima. Great S.P., 8 x 10 in. b/w, an image taken just after the first flag raising atop Mount Suribachi. Lindberg signs in full at top-right, adding '1st Flag Raiser, Iwo Jima Feb. 23, 1945 10:30 A.M.' Fine. Of the 40 man platoon that made the climb up Mount Suribachi and raised the first U.S. flag, 36 were killed or wounded in the subsequent fighting on Iwo Jima.
