Shepard Hardware Buffalo, NY - Circa 1890's Excellent In addition to encouraging children to save money, as all mechanical banks do, the Picture Gallery helps children to learn the alphabet. As the banks activating lever is pressed, all 26 letters (A to Z) appear in sequence in the window on the left. Simultaneously, the corresponding numbers 1 thru 26 appear in the window at the top of the bank. The window on the right contains pictograms that also relate to the letters. Thus, a child playing with this bank was able to review and reinforce his or her knowledge of the alphabet.
