Indian Shooting Bear Bank Original Bronze Pattern
J. & E. Stevens Company Cromwell, CT - Circa 1907 Stunning Pristine Paint & Patina Hand-painted by Charles Bailey This rare and unusual relic from the Stevens Company is the most fascinating object that RSL Auction Company has ever had the great privilege of selling on behalf of a client. I first encountered this splendid painted pattern about three decades ago at the Atlantique City Fair. It had been brought to Donal Markey by a picker who had gotten it out of a house in Connecticut. Leon and I tried to buy it from him, but he said he would save it for Frank. We knew instantly that it would go to the west coast. This is the first time that it has been offered for sale since its discovery. I am certain that Charles Bailey painted this pattern himself. It's fairly easy to identify his handiwork because it is always characterized by extra colorful foliage. One final captivating feature of this pattern is that Stevens intended to have moving blinking eyes for the bear figure.
