A rare photograph from the day of the liberation of the Buchenwald death camp - April 1945

A rare photograph showing inmates of the Buchenwald death camp cheering on the day of their release, next to a photograph of Stalin. Described and dated on the back in handwriting: "Liberation of the Buchenwald death camp, April 11, 1945".

In the liberation of the death camps, Stalin's character was seen as a savior, especially in light of the fact that he was considered the one who defeated the Nazi enemy, and brought to the end of World War II, by liberating the Soviet Union from the Nazi enemy, and defeating Germany in the war. The Soviet soldiers themselves were also the ones who liberated Majdanek and Auschwitz death camps.

A similar photograph see in the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.photographs - Record No. 19140, where it is described: "Survivors in Buchenwald cheer in front of a portrait of Stalin upon the liberation of the camp", and dated: 11-15 April 1945.
