ILLUSTRATED IN A SERIES OF LETTERS TO THE EDITOR OF THE PHILADELPHIA GAZETTE. BY ISSAC LEESER,

In 1828, an article in The London Quarterly
reflecting on the Jews was answered by Leeser
in the columns of The Richmond Whig, and
the reply attracted the attention of the Jewish
communities of Richmond and Philadelphia.
(This was ultimately published in book form).
According to many historians, this gained Leeser
much renown initiating his appointment as Cantor
of Congregation Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia.
Known for his translation and publication of various
important works, as well as his staunch defense of
the then small Jewish community, Leeser was one
of the most influential Jewish leaders of nineteenth
century America.
Fair condition. Some foxing and staining particularly
on the last few pages. C. Sherman & Co. 99 pages. 22.
5 cm. Fine half leather binding. Rosenbach 476.
