One of the most contentious divorces in history was the “Get of Cleves” in the late 18th century, which caused a rift between several rabbinic courts in Western Europe, and was the subject of much Halachic debate. The case involved a husband, who at times exhibited signs of mental illness that gave his wife a get. As a divorce bill can only be given by a sane individual, much analysis and discussion ensued regarding how to classify this individual, as well as the precise definition of insanity, in Halacha.
