The Rashar Hirsch - An Entire Essay in his Handwriting on "Haknayat Mussar Be'Beit Ha'Sefer" (Instilling Mussar at School) - Signed - Rare
An entire essay in the fluent, nice handwriting and with the signature of the Rashar Hirsch, with important content for understanding his educational doctrine.
The essay, whose titlw in German is "Von der Pflege des sittlichen Momentes in der Schule", was first printed in 1868 as an addendum to the invitation to the public examination of the educational institutions of the "Adat Yeshurun" community of Frankfurt am Main. These educational institutions were founded in 1853 by the Rashar Hirsch and according to his doctrine, which included methodical teaching of the Torah as well as general knowledge. The Rashar Hirsch headed the institutions for 24 years.
The essay was reprinted in the "Yeshurun" Journal in October 1869, pp. 1-17 and then again in 1902 in an anthology of the Rashar Hirsch's writings (Gesammelte Schriften), volume 1, pp. 281-295.
In his essay, the Rashar Hirsch criticizes the education method that was customary those days at the schools in Germany, which emphasized the imparting of knowledge for acquiring professional skills and for self-promotion while abandoning the student's moral education. The source of the method, in his opinion, was the common materialistic worldview.
In contrast, the Rashar Hirsch demands, first and foremost, to nurture the student's morals. He rejects the claim that the modern school has neither the time nor the means to do so and describes in general how teaching can be turned into a lesson in "moral education" without abandoning the teaching of general knowledge. The Rashar Hirsch continues to explain that the doctrine is actually the ancient doctrine of Judaism. Educating children to observe the Torah joyfully as well as imparting general knowledge will turn them into moral and happy adults capable of coping with all the challenges they might face.
The writings of the Rashar Hirsch that have been sold in auctions in recent years were drafts and partial essays. The manuscript before us is complete, as it was written by its writer, the Rashar Hirsch.
