Handwritten Semichah Letter by Hagaon Harav Yaakov Meir, Av Beis Din of Strasbourg and Leader of Napoleon’s Jewish Consistory, 1820.

Beautiful, handwritten semichah letter, written and enhanced with Talmudic parables and expressions by Hagaon Harav Yaakov Meir, Av Beis Din of Strasbourg, President of the Jewish Consistory in Alsace, and author of Shu”t Emes L’Yaakov.

Hagaon Harav Yaakov Meir (approx. 1739-1830) was one of the important Halachic authorities in France in his time. When Napoleon formed the Jewish Consistory, he was appointed by his friend Rabbi Dovid Zintzheim, author of the Yad Dovid, to serve as first director and president of the Consistory in Strasbourg, which was then the metropolis of the Alsace region.

Rav Yaakov worked hand-in-hand with his dear friend Rabbi Dovid Zintzheim to preserve authentic Judaism and succeeded him as rabbi of Strasbourg.

Both his signature and the complete wax seal note that he was “First in the Consistory.”

Strasbourg, 1820. Pale blue writing paper. Page size: 17x22 cm. Completely handwritten, signed and sealed in red wax with a seal that has lasted in its entirety.
