The Responsa of Rabbi Akiva Eiger is one of the fundamental halachic works from the period of the Achronim.
The title page bears the signature of Hagaon Harav Asher Lemmel Levy, and lengthy marginalia appear in his handwriting throughout the sefer.
Hagaon Harav Asher Lemmel (d. 1851) was Av Beis Din of Galin and one of the noted sages and dayanim in Yerushalayim. He was one of the three tzaddikim renowned as the Achim Kedoshim, Holy Brothers. The Chiddushei Harim wrote a letter of responsa to him, “My dear, beloved friend…a genius and thoroughly versed in Torah, righteous and scholarly and complete…” He concludes the responsa with a request that Harav Asher Lemmel pray for him (Shu”t Harim, Even Ha’ezer. Ch. 26).
His signature also appears on Leaf 30 as ‘Lemmel, ’ followed by signatures and stamps of his family members.

The Holy Brothers Journey to Eretz Hakodesh
Harav Asher Lemmel Levy journeyed to Eretz Yisrael in 1845 together with his brothers Harav Nachum of Shadik and Harav Shlomo Zalman Levy, after one night when they all shared a dream urging them to ascend to the Holy Land. These three tzaddikim were known far and wide as the Achim Kedoshim, Holy Brothers. The arrival of the three venerable Rabbanim made a lasting impact on the Old Yishuv and became known as “The Ascent of the Holy Brothers.”
