ELEANOR B. ROOSEVELT AND QUENTIN B. ROOSEVELT II
Small grouping of material from ELEANOR B. ROOSEVELT (1888-1960), the wife of General Theodore Roosevelt Jr. who died in France during World War II, and daughter-in-law of President Theodore Roosevelt. A small and tragic group of items, includes two T.L.S.'s , one as 'Eleanor', each 1p. 8vo., Oyster Bay, Feb. 1 and Apr. 14, 1949 to Gen. Clarence R. Huebner who had commanded the 1st Infantry Division, landing with them on Omaha Beach and leading them until the end of the war. Eleanor writes concerning the death of her son, Quentin B. Roosevelt II (1919-1948), named after his uncle who was KIA in World War I. Quentin served under Huebner, also landing on Omaha, and was killed in a plane crash in Hong Kong, on December 21, 1948. Eleanor writes, in part: '...I received the news about Quentin just twenty minutes after reaching the house on my return from Europe. I shall always be sorry I did not have a chance to tell him about my visit to you...Frances [Quentin's widow] and her little girls are here with me, and are a delight...We often talk of you...' The letters are stapled to larger sheets. Also present is a small hand-made card sent by Quentin and Frances to Huebner, probably just before the airplane crash: '...Quentin has his own airlift here - flying flour & cloth to surrounded cities [Chinese Revolution was underway] - It's quite a business...Cheers for the First Division...' Finally, there are carbon copies of Huebner's two letters to Eleanor expressing his uplifting thoughts.
