GUARDING RAILROADS IN TENNESSEE AND GEORGIA
Rare war-date printed report, 7 x 7 in., [n.d.], an uncredited report undoubtedly developed by Union engineers setting forth great detail on sixty crucial railroad bridges located on a variety or railroad lines between Atlanta, Chattanooga, Dalton, Kingston, Bridgeport, Cleveland, and other points between north of Atlanta and into central Tennessee. Information on the spans includes distance from the city indicated, location, river crossed, length, height above water, number of spans, type of bridge, and 'Remarks' One corner chip, else very good. The report comes from a group of documents owned by Lt. Henry Osterheld, 68th N.Y. Infantry, a Bavarian-born engineer tasked with construction of pontoon bridges and defense of existing spans. Included is an order sent to Osterheld on letterhead of the Headquarters Department of the Cumberland, Office of Chief Inspector of Railroad Defenses, 1p. 4to., Nashville, Sep. 28, 1864 assigning him to duty: '...in the office of the Chief Inspector Rail Road Defenses for the Department of the Cumberland...' Some toned spots, else very good. Two pieces.
