BENJAMIN F. BUTLER
(1818 - 1893) Union major general, called "The Beast" for his authoritarian control of occupied New Orleans. Later in the war, he commanded the Army of the James. Partly-printed D.S. as President of the Nation Asylum for disabled soldiers, 1p. oblong 8vo., Washington, Jan. 25, 1868, a check for $559.45 issued to the Old Colony and Newport Railway Company, signed at bottom-right corner. Folds, else fine. Sold with an engraving.
