CLARENCE R. HUEBNER IS HONORABLY DISCHARGED AFTER FIRST TERM IN U.S. ARMY
FROM THE ESTATE OF GEN. CLARENCE R. HUEBNER, COMMANDER OF THE 1ST INFANTRY DIVISION IN THE FIRST WAVE AT OMAHA BEACH Great partly-printed D.S, 2pp. 4to., Fort Mackenzie, Wyoming, Jan. 16, 1913, declaring that Clarence R. Huebner, then Quartermaster Sergeant within the 18th Infantry Regiment, has been honorably discharged for completing his three-year term of service. The document provides Huebner's date of enlistment on January 17, 1910, and classifies his character as 'excellent' at bottom. The reverse side bears his brief military record, which specifies that Huebner was 'serving in first enlistment period on date of discharge' with no previous service, and that his character was 'honest and faithful' with 'no unauthorized absences'. Folds, some creases and two paper clip stains, still very good condition. A one-of-a-kind document from the beginning of Huebner's historically important career! CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888 - 1972) was the American general who took command of the 1st Infantry Division, popularly known as the 'Big Red One', in early August of 1943. He commanded the division during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, where it was the first force to face the Germans on Omaha Beach, and he joined his men on the beach the same day. The division was instrumental in the breakthrough following the battle for St. Lo and in foiling the German counteroffensive at Mortain.
