USS SQUALUS HERO
LLOYD B. MANESS (1916-1944) Navy submariner. Maness was one of the heroes of the sinking of the USS SQUALUS on May 23, 1939, as he shut a watertight door protecting the forward compartments of the Squalus from flooding. That action also sealed the fate of 26 crewmen who quickly drowned in the aft compartments, including a friend for whom he was to be best man only a few days later. Maness remained in the submarine service, and was himself killed in action on the USS GROWLER. Very rare signature on a card: 'Lloyd B. Maness U.S.S. Sailfish 'No Longer Squalus'. SQUALUS was raised and renamed USS SAILFISH, a submarine that had a very successful war career.
