(1898 - 1975) American Army general who held Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, remembered for his reply to a German surrender ultimatum, "Nuts!" T.L.S. on Department of the Army letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington D.C., March 2, 1950, to an autograph collector, adding: '...I shall be happy to have my autograph placed with the stamps issued by Belgium to honor the defenders of Bastogne...' McAuliffe signs at the conclusion in blue ink. Mailing folds, else fine.
