JURGEN STROOP
(1895 - 1952) SS and Police Leader of the Poland-Warsaw area. It was Stroop who, during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943, ordered its suppression costing the lives of tens of thousands. As his forces were forced back by heavy resistance, he ordered the entire ghetto burned down, building by building, and the killing or deportation to extermination camps of all of its inhabitants. Afterwards, in an elaborately prepared report to Himmler, now referred to as 'The Stroop Report', he boasted that 'the Warsaw Ghetto is no more'. This report would later be used as evidence at the Nuremberg Trials. Tried and executed by the Poles in 1952. Good content war-date T.L.S. on his SS-Brigadefuhrer and Generalmajor der Polizei latterhead, 1p. 4to., Vienna, Feb. 6, 1943 to the Ss Personnel Dept. in Berlin. In part: '...To supplement my personnel files, I report that I was subsequently awarded the Infantry Assault Badge. I will present copies of the award certificate and the corresponding letter...I am transferred to Lemberg as the DD and police Leader Galicia..." Stains and spots in three corners with some minor loss, file holes in left margin, dockets, still overall very good. Beginning October 1942, Stroop commanded an SS garrison at Kherson where he likely received his medal while fighting partisans...and executing Jews. It was while he was in his new position at Lvov that he planned and executed the initial liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto a few months later.
