R. Yisroel Lifshitz of Cleves/ MaHaRITaTZ. First Edition. Venice 1694.
With handwritten glosses by R. Yisroel Lifshitz of Cleves.
Halachic responsa with some Talmudic novella by R. Yom Tov Tzahalon. Title page within typographic border surrounding a depiction of the Mishkan. On the verso there are diagrams of the Third Beis HaMikdash based upon the vision of the Navi Yechezkel.
R. Yom Tov Tzahalon (1559-after 1638), was a Talmid of R. Moshe of Trani. He lived in Tzefas and was one of the individuals who received Semicha from R. Moshe Alshich. He was also a Talmid of the Arizal. He served as an emissary of the community in Tzefas and travelled to Italy and Holland, and later to Egypt and Turkey.
R. Yisroel Lifschitz was the son of R. Eliezer of Apta, author of Damesek Eliezer on Chulin. He was a talmid of R. Yechezkel Katzenelenbogen. Known as a great Talmid Chochom and Posek, he served as Rav of Cleves. As such he was the presiding Rav on the famous “Cleves Get” which was one of the most contentious divorces in Jewish history. The case involved a husband, who at times exhibited signs of apparent mental illness who gave his wife a get. Since a divorce bill can only be given by a sane individual, much analysis and discussion ensued regarding how this individual should be classified, as well as the precise definition of insanity, in Halocha. R. Lifshitz authored the sefer Ohr Yisroel (Cleves 1770) setting out the basis of the decision of his Bais Din. Grandfather of R. Yisroel Lifschitz author of the Mishnayos Tiferes Yisroel.
