Menoras HaMaor. Magnificent handwritten decorated manuscript. Seemingly written on Papyrus.
Magnificent handwritten manuscript of the classic sefer Menoras HaMaor with the commentary Nefesh Yehuda, completely handwritten and decorated by hand. With artistic title page as well as two illustrations of a Menorah. The artist wrote primarily in black ink, with the titles and subtitles in red ink. There are also decorations at the beginning of different sections.
The Menoras HaMaor was authored by R. Yitzchak Abuav and was first published in Constantinople in 1514. Received to almost unprecedented acclaim, it was reprinted tens of times. Alluding to the seven-armed Menorah, he divided the sefer into seven sections, each of which bears the title of Ner or “Lamp” and is subdivided into separate parts and chapters. It is one of the primarily classic ethical works and for hundreds of years was enormously popular, amongst both scholars and laymen.
With an additional manuscript of Mishnayos Shabbos at the end.
More than 240 double sided pages. 23 cm. Excellent condition. Title page pasted onto backing. Page with one of the decorative menorahs with a small hole, slightly affecting text. Fine modern leather binding.
Opening bid $500
