R. Yehoshua Refoel Benveniste (1590-1668), was a talmid of R. Yosef M’Trani. He served as Rav in Constantinople and was one of the most distinguished Rabbonim in Turkey. Known as outstanding Talmid Chochom as well as a well-known physician, he authored numerous important seforim, notably this commentary on the Yerushalmi. Elder brother of R. Chaim Benveniste (Knesses HaGedolah).
