R. Yosef ben Meir HaLevi Ibn MGash (1077-1141), was one of the great Rishonim. He studied under the RIF in the great Yeshiva at Lucena and ultimately succeeded the RIF as Rosh Yeshiva. One of his most notable talmidim was R. Maimon, the father of the RaMBaM. As such his novella influenced the RaMBaM and Talmidei Chachomim often seek clues in the R’I MGash to assist them in correctly understanding the RaMBaM.
