Novella of Rabbeinu Nissim (Ra’N) on Tractate Bava Metzia. This was published from a manuscript that was in the possession of R. Zavel Eiger, a cousin of R. Akiva Eiger.
In addition to a warm approbation verifying the manuscripts authenticity, R. Akiva Eiger added his notes on the Ra’N (in brackets), as well as 10 pages of his own novella published at the end of the book. These are the first published novella of R. Akiva Eiger. Also included at the end are novella from R. Leib Eiger of Halberstadt and the aforementioned R. Zavel Eiger.
R. Akiva Eiger-Ginz (1761-1836), was born in Eisenstadt into a rabbinical family and was widely known as a known as a child prodigy. He studied in the Yeshiva of Mattersdorf, and following that in Breslau as a talmid of his maternal uncle R. Wolf Eiger. In 1791, he was appointed as Rav of Friedland where he remained until 1815, after which he became the Rav of Posen. He was world-renowned as an outstanding Talmid Chochom, Posek and the foremost leader of European Jewry during the early 19th century. His children include, R. Avrohom (1781-1853), and R. Shlomo (1785-1852), who was Rav in Kalisz, Poland and succeeded R. Akiva Eiger as Rav of Posen. His daughter Sorel (Eiger) Sofer (1790-1832), was the wife of the Chasam Sofer.
