CLASSICS. Chaim Sho’al. CHIDA. Gift from the CHIDA to R. Yitzchok Ardit. Glosses from the Rishon L’TZion R. Shlomo Moshe Suzin. Both Volumes. First Edition. Livorno 1792
Classic work of responsa by R. Chaim Yosef Dovid Azulai, the CHIDA.
R. Chaim Yosef Dovid Azulai (1724-1806), was one of the greatest Torah scholars and authors of his generation. He studied under the Ohr HaChaim HaKodosh and the RaShaSH and was a close contemporary of R. Yom Tov (MaHaRIT) Algazi. He was a prolific author writing more than eighty seforim on many aspects of Torah. His seforim were received with great acclaim and are classics of Torah scholarship.
On the title page of volume one there is an inscription from R. Yitzchok Ardit stating that he received this sefer from the author i.e. the Chida. In addition, there are glosses signed by R. Shlomo Moshe Suzin.
R. Yitzchok Ardit (1759-1812), was one of the greatest Talmidei Chachomim in Izmir. He was close to the CHIDA who quotes him in his seforim. Author of sefer Yekar HaErech on Maseches Erechin (Salonika 1823).
R. Shlomo Moshe Suzin (died 1835) was one of the best known Sephardic Talmidei Chachomim in Yerusholayim. He was appointed as a SHaDaR on behalf of the Old Yishuv and for a time served as Rav in Tunis. In 1824, he was appointed to the eminent position of Rishon L’TZion. As Rishon L’TZion, he worked closely with the leaders of the Ashkenazic community and was associated with both R. Menachem Mendel and R. Yisroel of Shklov.
