THEODORE ROOSEVELT

(1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. T.L.S. "Theodore Roosevelt" with one holograph addition on "The Outlook" letterhead, 1p. 8vo., New York, Aug. 6, 1910 to Samuel S. Koenig (1872-1955), New York Secretary of State and a staunch Republican. Roosevelt sends a campaign contribution: "Gracious me! To think of my overlooking to send you the $5! I inclose a $5 dollar bill at once. It was such a pleasure to see you...You are one of those men who have always been a benefit to me to talk to. I shall never forget the days of our association when I was Police Commissioner [of New York]..." Folds with some soiling and wrinkling, pin holes at top margin, and a short split at fold, still overall very good. Despite TR's gift, Koenig would be defeated in his effort to be reelected.
