RUTHERFORD B. HAYES
(1822-1893) Nineteenth President of the United States and Union brigadier general. Manuscript D.S., 1p. 4to., Washington D.C., Nov. 10, 1877, directing the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to the pardon of one Thomas D. Hawker. Hayes signs at the conclusion in black ink. Minor spot of foxing, else fine. According to congressional records, Hawker had been arrested for illicit distilling in the district of West Virginia.
