PIECE OF THE LAST FLAG TO FLY OVER ALLIED HEADQUARTERS

A great commemoration of the end of World War I, a piece of the last flag to fly over the Allied Headquarters at the Cathedral of Verdun after Germany's had formal surrender on November 11, 1918. The cotton cloth fragment, measuring 6 x 5 in. (sight), is constructed from three horizontal bars - one red, one white, and one blue - then stitched together, bearing the blue indelible pencil inscription on the central white bar: "From the Cathedral of Verdun, 1918". The fragment has been attractively double-matted in gray and brown mattes, beneath an original French photo postcard, 5.25 x 3.35 in. b/w, showing the cathedral under military control in 1917. Framed to a total size of 13.75 x 18 in. Not examined out of frame, and due to the incomplete provenance of the item, it is sold strictly as is.
