WORLD WAR I POSTER WITH STEEL MAGNATE CHARLES M. SCHWAB

Rare dual-color World War I poster, 21.5 x 32 in. bearing the title "Are You Working with Schwab?", showing an image of Charles M. Schwab meeting with war workers. The lower portion of the poster bears a printed message from Schwab, stated as Director General of the Emergency Fleet Corporation, which reads: "I want everyone in the yards to understandwhen we succeed in building these ships, the credit will belong to the men who actually built themI want all the men in the shipyards to feel that they are working with me, not for me." The bottom edge bears the publisher's line: "Issued by the Publications Section, Emergency Fleet Corporation, Philadelphia". Clearly worn at the margins with numerous splits and tears, unevenly toned towards the edges of the lower half, else very good. CHARLES M. SCHWAB (1862 1939) was an American steel magnate who elevated Bethlehem Steel to become the second-largest steel maker in the United States, later becoming Director General of the Emergency Fleet Corporation - a board which held master authority over all shipbuilding in the United States. On April 16, 1918, President Wilson had specifically asked Schwab to assume this responsibility. After America's entry into the war, he was accused of profiteering but was later acquitted.
