1916 BATTLE MAPS, 13TH CANADIAN BATTALION, ROYAL HIGHLANDERS
1916 BATTLE MAPS, 13TH CANADIAN BATTALION, ROYAL HIGHLANDERS
Excellent pair of original highly-detailed ink and colored pencil battle maps drawn by Canadian artist Lt. JOHN MCQUEEN MOYES (1888-1948) while serving with the 13th Canadian Battalion, The Royal Highlanders of Canada, in 1916. The 8 x 6 in. maps show, individually, German and Canadian trenches in a large section of the Ypres salient where the 13th Canadian Battalion fought, the second map showing the trenches occupied by the 3rd Canadian Infantry Brigade on Mount Sorrel, June 25, [1916]. The first map is signed. These maps originate from a larger group of illustrations made by Moyes in 1916 while he was at the front. Some positions are numbered, but no key is provided. The second map bears a black mark on verso which shows-through a bit, else both are fine. Moyes served for the length of the war and received two wounds in his left leg. One of his works is displayed in the Canadian War Museum.
