AIR MARSHALL ARTHUR W. TEDDER SIGNATURE MADE WITH THE PEN THAT SIGNED THE GERMAN SURRENDER
A most interesting relic from the German surrender in Berlin, the signature of British Air Marshal ARTHUR W. TEDDER (1890-1967), Deputy Supreme Commander at SHAEF who signed the final German surrender in Berlin on behalf of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, made with the same pen he used to sign the historic document. On a lined 3 x 5 inch card, Tedder writes in full: "A. W. Tedder 4.6.45. (signed with the same pen that signed at Berlin 9.5.45) AWT" Toned a bit, otherwise very good. Tedder is correct on the date: final versions of the surrender were not ready for signing until after midnight, May 8, 1945. Consequently, the physical signing was delayed until nearly 0100 on May 9; the document was then back-dated to May 8 to be consistent with the Reims agreement and the public announcements of the surrender already made by Western leaders.
