THE SUICIDE LETTER OF ADOLF HITLER'S BROTHER-IN-LAW, DR. MARTIN HAMMITZSCH
Lengthy and revealing suicide letter of Dr. Martin Hammitzsch (1878-1945), two pages, written in Dresden on May 12, 1945. Hammitzch was the second husband of Angela Hitler whom he married in 1936. Angela, whose first husband Leo Raubal had died in 1910, had three children, among them daughter Geli. Geli, of course, became closely attached to Hitler, and the relationship ended in her suicide using Adolf Hitler's pistol. Her death deeply affected and depressed Hitler, probably for the rest of his life. In 1936, Angela married Dr. Martin Hammitzsch, a well-recognized architect of whom Hitler apparently disapproved. Nevertheless, Hammitzsch joined the Wehrmacht, leaving in 1943 to take a position with the government in Saxony. Hammitzsch's letter, scrawled in smeared pencil on both sides of a 8.75 x 12 inch lightweight leaf, reads in part: "That will be the end! I think of my adorable German country, for which I have served as truly as I could for life. In spite of the heroic struggle of the army and all the German people, the enemy succeeded by a superiority of men, arms and materiel supported by a disgraceful treasonI think of the Fuhrer with profound respect and gratitude. His heroic work, crownedin a wonderful manner by his heroic deathI believe with all my heart in Adolf Hitler, and to his ideals, and in his immense mythosEspecially I am reminded of my wife AngelaI pray that she will be protected by God and that she will keep the power of a brave heartMy love for Angela remains greatI am anxious when I think of her departureIt happened because I wanted it toPoor Germany. As an old man I don't want to survive the coming time of dishonor. May God protect my people" Condition as noted. SOLD WITH: an "Ausweis", or pass issued to and signed by Hammitzsch, 4pp. 6 x 4 in. (opened), Dresden, Sep. 7, 1943. As a Federal State employee of Saxony, the stern-faced Hitler family member is permitted "to pass through any barrier unhindered for purposes of official business" and is to be granted police protection and assistance if necessary. Fine condition. Angela had been moved from fire-bombed Dresden by Hitler, according to most sources. This may have provoked Hammitzsch's depression. His body was found on May 12, 1945 in the state forest district of Oberwiesenthal near the Czechoslovak border. In 1948 his entire assets were confiscated posthumously and transferred to public ownership. Photo of Paula Hitler for illustrative purposes only and not included.
