Rabbi Avraham Karpeles was the Only Bachur to Receive Semicha from the Ksav Sofer

Handwritten and signed response from Rabbi Avraham Karpeles, ab”d of Gurbe-Pinzahely, regarding complaints aroused against a shochet and his wife. The response is addressed to Rabbi Eliyahu Menachem Goitein, ab”d of Hőgyész.

Rabbi Avraham Karpeles (1830-1895) ab”d of Gurbe-Pinzahely. He was a renowned halachic authority in Hungary and a prized disciple of the Ksav Sofer. He organized all of the Ksav Sofer’s responsa for print upon his request. In his endorsement to Ohel Avraham, Rabbi Eliezer Zussman Sofer writes that Rabbi Avraham was the “head and glory of the yeshiva and always found favor in his argumentation with our Rabbi [the Ksav Sofer]…”

Rabbi Yehuda Greenwald, author of Zichron Yehuda, attests that his tremendous greatness commanded the respect of all and that he was the address for all complicated matters.

Responsa addressed to Rabbi Avraham were published in the sefarim Resposa Ksav Sofer, Responsa Maharam Shick and Responsa Mahar”i Assad.

His authored responsa were published in sefer Ohel Avraham by his son-in-law, Rabbi Shlomo Katz, ab”d of Sabslau.
