Rolland Harve Golden (Louisiana, 1931-2019) Silent Watch 1966 The composition, believed to be derived from an historic New Orleans Cemetery, is signed and dated lower right front. Born in New Orleans, Rolland Golden became a distinctive chronicler of the American South, painting its rural roads, weathered buildings, Mississippi Delta landscapes and monuments of New Orleans over a career spanning six decades. After the Korean war, he returned to New Orleans and studied under the Southern Regionalist John McCrady at the John McCrady Art School in the French Quarter, graduating in 1957. According to the New Orleans Museum of Art, Golden spent the following decade recording old buildings, courtyards and streets at a moment when preservation of the French Quarter had become an important local concern. He contributed architectural drawings to the Vieux Carre Courier and roamed the Quarter with a camera, seeking out the weathered and timeworn subjects that particularly interested him, subjects like those pictured in this painting.
