Thurman Gene Nicholson was an American painter, educator, and gallery owner associated with Chicago and Michigan City, Indiana. He exhibited in Chicago with leading figures of surrealism and magic realism, including Gertrude Abercrombie, Julia Thecla, and sculptor Egon Weiner. He also participated in the second annual Ballet in Art exhibition at Mandel Brothers' Art Exhibition Galleries, an initiative organized with Thecla and fellow Chicago modernists, and showed in the landmark 1957 Chicago Artists No-Jury Exhibition held at the Navy Pier. His painting In a Dark Mirror was an award winner at the Hoosier Salon Exhibition of 1949. Thurman Nicholson painted from a wheelchair, possibly a result of infantile paralysis, and according to two different statements by artists of the period, was an instructor at the Chicago Art Institute. As a gallery owner, the Louise and Thurman Nicholson Galleries showed the work of the important Chicago Modernist Salcia Bahnc (1898-1976) among many others.
