Betty Angelos Sabo (New Mexico, 1928-2016) - BETTY SABO (1928-2016) TAOS OIL ON ARTIST'S BOARD. Betty Angelos Sabo (New Mexico, 1928-2016) Taos Mountains Autumn The view of Taos foothills in Autumn is signed lower left front in red pigment. Born near Kansas City, Missouri to a family she described as ''poor dirt farmers, '' Betty and her family moved to Albuquerque for the health of her father, who had tuberculosis. She attended the University of New Mexico majoring in art, and later studied with the famous artist and teacher Carl Von Hassler. His influence on her painting style is evident. Around the age of 30, she remarried, taking the name Betty Sabo. A few short years later she took first prize at the New Mexico State Fair, and would go on to paint, exhibit, win awards and sell her paintings for the next 30 years. When she developed an allergy to the paints she was using, Betty turned her attention to sculpture as a form of expression, much like her brother Gary Beals, a contemporary sculptor who works in stainless steel.
