The New York Finger Lakes landscape is signed lower right front. Frank Barney was an American landscape painter closely associated with Auburn and the Finger Lakes region of New York. Born in Union Springs, New York, he received his first instruction in oil painting from a carriage painter before studying at the Art Students League in New York and privately with landscape painter William Merritt Post. In 1895 he traveled to France, where exposure to Barbizon and French Impressionist painting brought a freer handling and brighter palette to his work as seen in the present work. Barney returned to central New York and devoted much of his long career to painting the lakes, farms, streams and changing seasons of the Finger Lakes region. He became a member of New York's prestigious Salmagundi Club in 1897 and exhibited at venues including the National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts and Society of Independent Artists. He also participated in the Federal Art Project of the WPA during the 1930s. Board measures 11.5 x 16 with a framed size of 15.5 x 19.5 inches. 2. An illegibly signed mountain landscape, possibly the work of Kansas artist Emil C. Fischer (Kansas, 1907-2008). The work measures 12 x 18 with a framed size of 17.75 x 23.5 inches.
