Boris Margo was born in Volochisk, Ukraine, and trained in Odessa and Moscow before coming to the United States, settling in New York in 1930. There he studied and then taught at the Roerich Museum and became a part of the circle from which American Abstract Expressionism developed. According to the The Delaware Art Museum, he worked as an assistant to Arshile Gorky and shared an apartment with Mark Rothko. His work is held in the Whitney Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, Yale University Art Gallery and numerous other collections.
